Life Moves

If you have read some of my previous blog posts you would know that Mr B and I have some big plans for our ‘life after kids’. We are planning on travelling around Australia in a caravan for several years. {You can read more about that Here} We know that this will be a big change to our life as we know it and that for times when we aren’t working, we will need some money behind us so if we can get rid of as much debt now as possible, this will put us in a much better position later on.

We bought our first house here on the Gold Coast in 2005 and then bought an investment property in 2011.  We then turned our main home into an investment property in 2012.  We had discussed selling that house a few times as it had the smaller mortgage on it so we stood to make a decent profit out of it’s sale. So, when our tenants announced that they were moving out we decided that it was the ideal time to sell.

With interest rates at a long term low at the moment we knew that the house would sell quickly which it did.

Selling our former family home was an easy decision to make.

Selling our former family home was an easy decision to make.

Selling this house has been relatively painless…..we had a good agent and although it hasn’t settled on time it should do so in the next few days.

Our next dilemma was what we should do with our other house.  It is an older house (built in 1995) and has a slightly bigger mortgage on it but in it’s present condition would not fetch a price that we would be happy with if we sold it now. So we have decided to move into it for a couple of years and do some renovations before we put it on the market.

As it has been tenanted for the last 4 years it is definitely in need of some TLC, especially in the cleaning department.  Sadly the tenants allowed their dogs inside so it has taken some extra carpet cleaning and deodorizing to make it smell nice again.  We thought about replacing the carpets but will wait a few months until we have some extra cash as the kitchen appliances are a first priority.

We have spent about a week cleaning it and I have so far repainted the pantry as it was a drab yellowy colour and the shelves were stained and dis-coloured. We have also decided to re-paint Miss M’s room straight away as well.  She was probably least in favour of the move as she has a really big room and her own bathroom where we currently live and she will have to go back to sharing a bathroom with her brother and her bedroom is much smaller.  So yes, painting it is a bit of bribery!  Master B doesn’t really care, but I will paint his room in the next couple of weeks just to freshen it up.

This will be our home for the next 2 or 3 years.

I have scrubbed the kitchen to within an inch of it’s life and I am satisfied that it is now clean!  We will eventually put a new kitchen in – thank goodness Mr B is very clever and we can do most of the work ourselves. We have already had to remove the cupboard and side panel to the left of the oven as our fridge wouldn’t fit in! The range hood was revolting – caked in old oil so it has already been pulled out!

We would like to put a new kitchen in very soon.

Today he installed an automatic shed opener for me – a must if it is pouring rain or I am coming home late at night when he is away.  The kit was only $300 from the local hardware shop and it took him less than an hour to install it!  Because he loves his gadgets this one even has a pin pad so the kids won’t even need to take a key when they go out!

Possibly the only draw-back to this move is that we are going back to having a lawn and garden to maintain.  We don’t even own a lawn mower anymore.  I think I will be paying someone to mow for us again.

All in all I am happy with our decision to move into this house.  After renting ourselves for the past two and a half years it will be nice to live in something that is ours again.  It is actually a really nice house and I particularly love the dining room area – it has curved windows and looks out over the backyard and my desk will fit perfectly into one corner.

The dining room looks out over the back yard and we have parkland directly behind us.

Now we just have to finish packing everything up here and book the removalist truck!  Wish me luck……
